Shopify QR Code Help with Shopcodes: Packaging, Print and Checkout

Shopcodes is Shopify's own free app for making a Shopify QR code that sends shoppers to one product. Each code opens either the product page or checkout with that product already in the cart, and downloads as a PNG for screens and an SVG for print. See Shopcodes on the Shopify App Store.

Creating a single code takes a minute. Putting codes on packaging, shelf cards and event signage takes planning: the right destination for each spot, discounts tied in, print files that scan, and someone reading the scan and conversion reports afterward.

When no profile below fits, the packaging design and POS specialists linked at the end of this page take on Shopcodes work as well.

Send the product list, where each code will be printed and any discount you want attached.

Shopcodes jobs that need more than one click

Making a Shopcode is quick. Making a set of them earn their space on a box or a shelf is the paid part.

A destination for every placement. The product page suits browsing, such as a code beside a display item. Checkout with the product in the cart suits a reorder card in the parcel. Mixing them up costs sales either way.

Discounts wired to print. Only the checkout destination takes a discount, and the app lists just the 50 most recent discount codes. The discount gets created and tested first, then attached.

Artwork that scans. The SVG is the file meant for print. Size, contrast and the optional help text above the code all need a test print before a run of boxes. Packaging designers handle placement on inserts and labels.

Codes per variant. A code can point at a specific variant, so a scent or size that sells from print can get its own code.

Reading the numbers. Each code has Scans and Conversions reports, and sales and sessions show up as attributed to marketing. Turning that into a keep-or-cut call per placement is attribution work.

Retiring a product without reprinting. Changing the connected product sends codes already in print to the new link. Planned well, old packaging stays usable.

A one-off sign. For a single code on a pop-up poster, Shopify's help page is enough. Make it yourself.

What to ask before someone builds your Shopcodes rollout

Anyone can press Create Shopcode. Ask the questions that show they've run codes in print before.

Which destination, and why? A good answer ties the checkout destination to repeat buys and printed offers, and the product page to discovery. A single answer for every placement is a weak sign.

How will they test before the print run? Expect a scan from a proof at final size, with a phone camera, then a check that the link opens and any discount applies at checkout.

How will codes be titled? Titles sit next to the Scans and Conversions links on the Shopcodes index. Titles like "Box insert, lavender 200ml" keep reports readable months later.

Edit or delete? Shopify's doc says edited links carry over to printed codes, but doesn't say what a printed code does once deleted. Someone who plans to delete and recreate codes when products change hasn't read it.

What access do they need? The app requires access to products, orders, marketing events and price rules. Grant it for the project and review it afterward.

A sensible first paid task: one product, one placement, a test print and scan, and a short report on scans and conversions after the first few weeks.

Shopify QR code rules inside Shopcodes: destinations, discounts, edits

Two places to create. Apps > Shopcodes > Create Shopcode, or a product page via More actions > Create a Shopcode. Either way you set a title, a scan destination and options, then click Create and Download.

One product per code. Pick a variant if it matters. Products without variants use the Default Title variant.

Two destinations. The product page on your online store, or checkout with the product already in the cart. Discounts work only with the second.

Discount picker limit. The app shows your 50 most recent discount codes, so an older code may need recreating.

Files. A zip with a PNG for online use and an SVG for print.

Where edits happen. Title, destination, variant, discount and help text can change from the app or the product page. Swapping the product or deleting a code happens only in the app.

Status as of October 2026. Free, English only, launched September 12, 2017, and listed under Retail in the POS QR codes category.

Shopcodes questions from merchants printing QR codes

Is Shopcodes a free Shopify QR code generator?

Yes. Shopify builds it, and its App Store listing showed no charge in October 2026. Shopify's help page describes codes that each link to one product, opening either its product page or checkout. It doesn't describe codes for collections or other pages, so check that fits before planning a campaign around it.

Can a Shopcode apply a discount?

Yes, if the destination is checkout with the product in the cart. That is the only destination that supports discounts. The app shows your 50 most recent discount codes, so create the discount close to the time you build the Shopcode and test it on a phone first.

What happens to printed codes if I change the product?

They follow the change. Shopify's doc says codes you have already downloaded or printed send customers to the new link, so no reprint is needed. The doc doesn't cover deleted codes, which is a good reason to repoint a code rather than delete it.

How do I see if a Shopify QR code is working?

Open Apps > Shopcodes and click Scans or Conversions next to the code to see its traffic or conversion report. Sales and sessions from codes also appear in Shopify's marketing attribution reports. Clear titles make both far easier to read.

Do I need a developer for Shopify Shopcodes?

No code is involved. Where help pays is design and planning: print placement, destinations, discounts and reading results. For the in-store side, Shopify POS setup covers the retail context codes often sit in.
