How MOTIF Built Its Own Fashion Brand to Test What Most Agencies Only Recommend

May 2026 - Present

OFFCULTURE® is an independent fashion brand created, built and operated by MOTIF®.

It began at zero, without an inherited identity, customer base, ecommerce store or existing growth engine. That gave MOTIF something most agency projects cannot: the ability to make every decision from the beginning, then live with the commercial consequences of those decisions.

From brand positioning and creative direction to Shopify, merchandising, content and growth, OFFCULTURE became a real-world proving ground for the thinking MOTIF brings to selected fashion, lifestyle and DTC brands.

The work has since received independent recognition. OFFCULTURE was selected as Store of the Day by The Ecommerce Design Awards, where the project is credited to MOTIF and listed as a Shopify fashion store.

Its cinematic and AI-assisted creative work has also received recognition from Higgsfield, including appearances and mentions across Higgsfield video and community/platform content.

This was never created as a portfolio exercise. It is a company we operate, fund, market and continue to build.

OFFCULTURE is built for fashion-conscious Gen Z and millennial customers drawn to darkwear, progressive streetwear, western influences, unconventional construction and pieces that sit outside mass-market fashion.

They tend to discover taste before they discover products. Fashion references, music, culture, editorial imagery and visual platforms can shape the purchase long before someone searches for a specific jacket or pair of pants.

OFFCULTURE was therefore built for a customer who does not simply want more clothing. They want pieces capable of saying something about who they are without having to explain it.

The Challenge

The goal was not to launch another Shopify fashion store. MOTIF wanted to answer a harder question:

If we had to build the brand ourselves, with our own capital, reputation and commercial risk behind every decision, would we still make the same recommendations we make to clients?

OFFCULTURE became the answer.

We set out to build the company from the ground up, connecting brand, creative, commerce and growth from the beginning rather than assembling them later through different partners.

The Shopify experience needed to carry the brand without sacrificing usability. The catalogue needed room to grow without becoming difficult to shop. Creative needed to create desire rather than simply decorate product pages. And customer acquisition needed to work with the brand rather than gradually turning it into a performance-marketing operation wearing fashionable clothes.

Most importantly, it had to work with real customers.

OFFCULTURE started from a completely blank page, with no existing website, ecommerce architecture, inherited audience, established customer behaviour or historical sales engine.

OFFCULTURE started from a blank page.

That meant MOTIF had to make the decisions normally distributed between a founder, brand studio, ecommerce agency, creative team and growth partner, while making sure those decisions supported one another rather than competing for attention.

The challenge was not fixing something broken. It was deciding what deserved to exist in the first place. And then proving those decisions outside a presentation deck.

Solution

MOTIF built OFFCULTURE as one connected business rather than a sequence of separate branding, web and marketing projects.

The work began with the positioning and world of the brand, then moved through identity, customer experience, Shopify, catalogue architecture, merchandising, creative production and customer acquisition.

Shopify was treated as part of the brand experience rather than simply the technology behind checkout.

The store had to communicate OFFCULTURE before asking someone to buy from it, while still helping customers move naturally through a growing assortment of jackets, bottoms, knitwear, tees, footwear and accessories.

That same thinking extended outside the storefront.

MOTIF developed the photographic and cinematic language of OFFCULTURE, its product storytelling, editorial direction and commercial creative. New production methods, including AI-assisted filmmaking and image production, allowed us to test how far a smaller fashion company could push visual production without inheriting the cost structure of a traditional luxury campaign.

Some of that work went on to attract recognition from Higgsfield, whose technology formed part of the production workflow. Publicly, MOTIF has also documented the use of Higgsfield within OFFCULTURE’s cinematic production process.

We continued operating the brand after launch, which meant every decision could be judged against customer behaviour rather than internal approval.

The mechanisms behind that system remain proprietary. The result does not.

  • Built OFFCULTURE’s Shopify commerce experience from zero.

  • Created its positioning, identity and customer-facing visual world.

  • Developed the digital art direction across commerce, campaign and editorial work.

  • Established a scalable structure for products, collections and merchandising.

  • Created more relevant product discovery experiences across different apparel categories.

  • Connected storytelling and commerce rather than treating editorial content as decoration.

  • Developed cinematic brand films and fashion campaigns around a consistent visual language.

  • Introduced new AI-assisted production workflows for high-quality fashion creative.

  • Built organic discovery into the commercial model rather than relying entirely on paid traffic.

  • Connected customer acquisition, merchandising and the storefront around the same brand strategy.

  • Established measurement practices for understanding customer journeys that do not always fit neatly inside last-click attribution.

  • Continued iterating the live business using actual customer and commercial behaviour.

This is enough to show depth without exposing how the machine works.

Result

OFFCULTURE moved from a blank page to a functioning international fashion business with its own identity, Shopify ecosystem, expanding catalogue, customers, creative language and acquisition system.

But some of the strongest evidence came from outside MOTIF.

On September 21, 2026, OFFCULTURE was named Store of the Day by The Ecommerce Design Awards, which describes its awards as recognition for ecommerce experiences balancing design with commercial functionality. The official listing credits MOTIF as the agency and identifies OFFCULTURE as a Shopify fashion store.

OFFCULTURE’s cinematic work also attracted attention from Higgsfield through recognition and appearances across its content ecosystem, giving the creative another form of external validation beyond the fashion audience itself.

Commercially, customers began purchasing across categories, including higher-value multi-product orders, while organic discovery started contributing alongside paid acquisition.

The brand’s Pinterest presence reached more than 200K monthly views during its early growth period, while the storefront grew from zero into a catalogue capable of supporting hundreds of products without abandoning the visual restraint of the brand.

Perhaps more important than any individual metric, OFFCULTURE became what MOTIF intended it to be:

A company where our ideas have to make money before they are allowed to become case-study slides.

“OFFCULTURE is one of the clearest expressions of how MOTIF thinks. We built the brand from zero, made every decision ourselves, and tested those decisions against real customers, real sales and real market response. It gave us the chance to prove that strong brand thinking and strong commerce do not have to compete with each other.”
