Shopify Express Checkout Not Showing? Causes and Fixes

11 min read
19 Sep, 2026

Before fixing anything, check what device you're testing on. Apple Pay only appears in Safari on Apple devices with a card in Wallet, and Google Pay needs a supported browser with a saved card — so a merchant checking on desktop Chrome often sees buttons missing that customers can see perfectly well. If they're genuinely missing, the usual causes are a theme setting switched off, the wallet not enabled in payment settings, subscription products, or a custom theme missing the code that renders them.

AI Summary

Shopify express checkout buttons such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay frequently appear missing because the merchant is testing on an ineligible device or browser. Genuine causes include the dynamic checkout button setting being off in the theme, the wallet not enabled in payment settings, products with subscription selling plans, and custom themes missing the Liquid that renders the buttons. Buttons on product pages also skip the cart, which can reduce average order value.

The most common express checkout "bug" isn't a bug. A merchant opens their store on a laptop in Chrome, sees no Apple Pay button, and starts changing settings. Meanwhile customers on iPhones are using Apple Pay without any trouble.

Express checkout buttons only appear when the visitor's device can use them. Apple Pay needs Safari on an Apple device with a card in Wallet. Google Pay needs a supported browser with a saved payment method. Shop Pay is broader, but still depends on your payment setup. So what you see on your own machine tells you very little about what customers see.

Check that first. Open the store on an iPhone in Safari, and on an Android phone in Chrome, before touching anything. A surprising number of these problems end right there.

If the buttons are genuinely missing on eligible devices, the cause is almost always one of five things, covered below in the order worth checking them.

This article is about buttons not appearing. If they appear but payment fails, that's covered in Shopify payments not working. If checkout itself errors or won't load, see Shopify checkout not working.

Wallet availability, eligibility rules and settings locations change. Confirm current behaviour in Shopify's own documentation before relying on any specific detail here.

Three places buttons appear, three different controls

"Express checkout" covers buttons in three different places, and each is controlled separately. Knowing which one is missing narrows the cause immediately.

WhereWhat controls it
Product page (dynamic checkout buttons)A setting in the theme's product section, plus the payment methods you have enabled
Cart page or cart drawerWhether your theme includes the additional checkout buttons code in the cart
Top of the checkout pageYour payment settings and which wallets are enabled

Why this matters: if buttons show at checkout but not on the product page, payments are fine and the problem is your theme. If they're missing everywhere, look at payment settings first. If they show on product pages but not in the cart drawer, it's almost always a theme that doesn't include them in the cart.

The causes, in the order to check them

1. The device or browser can't use that wallet. Covered above and worth repeating, because it accounts for so many reports. Test on the device your customers actually use before assuming anything is broken.

2. The theme setting is off. Most themes have a toggle for dynamic checkout buttons in the product page section. Themes ship with it on or off depending on the developer's choice, and theme updates or switches can reset it. Check it in the theme editor on your product template.

3. The wallet isn't enabled in your payment settings. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled in your payments settings, and several of them depend on Shopify Payments being active. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, the express options available to you can be different. Setup is covered in Shopify payments setup.

4. The product has a subscription or special selling plan. Products that require a selling plan — subscriptions, some pre-orders and deposits — may not support dynamic checkout buttons on the product page, because the buyer needs to choose the plan first. This is expected behaviour rather than a fault. See Shopify subscriptions.

5. A custom or heavily edited theme is missing the code. Covered in the next section. The most common cause on stores with bespoke themes.

Less common causes worth ruling out: the market or currency isn't supported by that wallet, which matters if you sell internationally through Shopify Markets; the buyer is a B2B company customer, where accelerated checkout can behave differently — see B2B and wholesale on Shopify; or a checkout customisation or app is interfering with what renders.

When a custom theme is the cause

Standard Shopify themes include the code that renders express buttons. Custom themes, heavily edited themes and themes built by developers unfamiliar with Shopify frequently don't.

Product pages render dynamic checkout buttons through a payment button output inside the product form — in Liquid, {{ form | payment_button }}. If the product form was rebuilt and that line was dropped, the buttons disappear regardless of any setting.

Cart pages and cart drawers render express buttons through {{ content_for_additional_checkout_buttons }}, usually wrapped in a check that additional checkout buttons are available. Custom cart drawers are the most frequent place this goes missing, because drawers are often rebuilt from scratch.

How to check without being a developer: switch temporarily to a current Shopify theme in preview. If the buttons appear there and not on your live theme, the theme is the cause and settings are fine. That single test saves a lot of guessing.

This is exactly the kind of platform-specific detail a general web developer misses — the difference covered in expert versus generalist developers. Restoring it is usually a small job for someone who knows the theme architecture — theme customization experts.

Before fixing it: do you actually want them everywhere?

Worth asking, because the answer isn't always yes.

Express buttons at checkout are almost always worth having. A customer who has already decided to buy can skip typing their address and card details. That removes friction at the point where it costs the most.

Express buttons on product pages are a genuine trade-off. They send the buyer straight to checkout with one item, bypassing the cart. For a store where most orders are a single product, that's excellent. For a store that relies on the cart for add-ons, bundles or free-shipping thresholds, it can quietly pull down average order value, because customers who would have added a second item never see the prompt.

Lower basket value also costs more than it looks. Fixed per-transaction fees hit harder on small orders.

The honest answer is to test it. Turn product-page buttons on for a period, compare conversion rate and average order value against a period without, and keep whichever produces more revenue per visitor. The method is covered in Shopify CRO. Some stores find that removing them is the right fix rather than restoring them.

When to get help

Checking devices, the theme setting and payment settings takes ten minutes. Three situations are worth handing over.

A custom theme that's lost the button code. Usually a small, contained job — but in a heavily edited theme it's easy to break the product form while restoring it — theme customization experts.

Payment provider questions. If you use a third-party provider, run multiple gateways, or sell across markets with different wallet support, which express options are available becomes a configuration decision — payment gateway experts.

Checkout customisation on Plus. If checkout extensions or customisations are affecting what renders, that's specialist work — checkout customization experts.

If you can't tell which of these it is, bug fixing and troubleshooting experts can diagnose it quickly. Development specialists by market: United States, United Kingdom, Australia.

How to vet: ask what device they tested on. Anyone reporting missing Apple Pay from a Windows laptop hasn't diagnosed anything yet.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify express checkout

Why is Shopify express checkout not showing on my store?
First check the device you are testing on, since express buttons only appear when the visitor's device can use that wallet — Apple Pay requires Safari on an Apple device with a card in Wallet. If buttons are genuinely missing on eligible devices, the usual causes are the dynamic checkout button setting being off in the theme, the wallet not being enabled in payment settings, products with subscription selling plans, or a custom theme missing the code that renders the buttons.
Why don't I see Apple Pay on my Shopify store?
Most often because you are not viewing the store on an eligible device. Apple Pay appears only in Safari on an Apple device with a card saved in Wallet, so it will not show on Chrome or on Windows. If it is missing on an eligible device, check that Apple Pay is enabled in your payment settings and that you are using a payment setup that supports it, which typically means Shopify Payments.
Why are dynamic checkout buttons missing on some products?
Products that require a selling plan, such as subscriptions and some pre-orders or deposits, may not support dynamic checkout buttons on the product page, because the buyer needs to choose the plan before paying. This is expected behaviour rather than a fault. If buttons are missing on ordinary products, check the theme setting and whether the product form still includes the payment button code.
Why do express checkout buttons show on product pages but not in the cart?
Usually because the theme's cart page or cart drawer does not include the code that renders additional checkout buttons. Custom cart drawers are the most frequent cause, since they are often rebuilt from scratch without it. Previewing a current standard Shopify theme is a quick way to confirm the theme is the cause rather than your payment settings.
Should I show express checkout buttons on product pages?
It depends on how customers buy. Product-page buttons send buyers straight to checkout with one item, which works well for stores where most orders contain a single product. For stores relying on the cart for add-ons, bundles or free-shipping thresholds, they can reduce average order value by skipping those prompts. Test with and without them and keep whichever produces more revenue per visitor.

Next step

Open your store on an iPhone in Safari and an Android phone in Chrome before changing anything. If the buttons appear there, nothing is broken.

If they're genuinely missing, work out where — product page, cart or checkout — because that tells you whether to check the theme or the payment settings. Then preview a standard Shopify theme to rule the theme in or out in one step.

And while you're in there, decide whether you want product-page buttons at all. For multi-item stores, removing them can be worth more than fixing them.

For custom themes, multi-gateway setups or checkout customisation, browse payment gateway experts. Free matching, verified experience, no commissions.
