About

I'm Phil, a senior Shopify developer with over five years building and refining storefronts for ecommerce brands. My core stack is JavaScript and TypeScript, with deep expertise in Liquid and Online Store 2.0 theme development, from fully custom builds to extending and modernising existing themes.

Alongside theme work, I specialise in performance and conversion optimisation: cutting load times, improving Core Web Vitals and making data-informed UX changes that lift conversion rates. I work regularly with the wider Shopify ecosystem, including Klaviyo, Recharge and Rebuy, integrating, customising and troubleshooting them as part of larger builds.

I work in small, reversible steps: build and review on a development theme, preserve existing customisations, and publish only after sign-off. I'm comfortable owning a project end to end or providing senior cover inside an existing team.

I work best with brands scaling past their first theme, or teams needing senior support on a specific build.

FAQ

What types of Shopify projects do you specialise in?
Theme development and customisation on Online Store 2.0 (Liquid plus JavaScript and TypeScript), full store builds, app integrations (Klaviyo, Rebuy, Recharge, Algolia), performance optimisation, and conversion-focused UX. I am comfortable owning a build end to end or dropping into an existing store to fix one specific problem.
Do you work with existing themes, or do I need a custom build?
Both. Most of my clients have an existing theme (Dawn, Impulse, Prestige, Horizon, Savor, Out of the Sandbox themes) that needs extending or cleaning up, and I also build new stores from scratch. Either way I work on a duplicate development theme, so your live store is never at risk and nothing publishes without your sign-off.
What's your typical turnaround time?
For scoped tasks such as a bug fix, a new section or an app integration, usually two to five business days. For larger builds and phased projects I give you a milestone timeline upfront. You will not be left waiting and wondering, I communicate progress throughout.
How do you handle integrations like Klaviyo, Rebuy or Recharge?
At the code level, not just in app settings. That means wiring events correctly (for example Add-to-Cart tracking through every cart path), migrating legacy snippets to App Blocks so your team keeps full Customiser control, and making sure tools do not conflict with each other. I have fixed several stores where a speed app or a rushed install was causing silent failures.
My store feels slow. Can you help without another speed app?
Usually yes, and often the third-party speed app is part of the problem. I work natively at the theme level: image optimisation, correct lazy loading, script deferral, and removing duplicate or conflicting code. I measure Core Web Vitals before and after so the improvement is real and visible, not just a dashboard number.
Do you offer ongoing support after a project completes?
Yes. I offer a flexible monthly retainer (typically four hours per month, larger blocks available) for tweaks, new sections, app updates and general upkeep. It suits stores that are actively growing and want a developer on call rather than re-hiring for every small job.
What do you need from me to get started?
A clear brief and collaborator access to your store. I review the store before we agree scope and flag anything I spot that might affect the work. For new builds I also ask for your brand guide or design references so we are aligned before a line of code is written. Here is Shopify's guide to granting collaborator access: https://help.shopify.com/en/partners/manage-clients-stores/client-transfer-stores
Where are you based, and which time zones do you work with?
I am UK-based and work regularly with clients across Europe and North America. I keep communication clear and asynchronous where helpful, and align on response windows upfront so the time difference never slows the work down.
