Shopify Theme Updater App Help: Safer Updates and Store Backups

The Shopify theme updater app from Out of the Sandbox, listed as Theme Updater & Backups | OOTS, moves a supported premium theme to its newest version without a rebuild. On the Pro plan it builds the update as a new draft theme and tries to merge your content, settings and code edits into it. A separate Vault plan backs up products, orders, customers and themes. Theme Updater on the App Store.

Experts come in where the merge stops. Edits the AI can't carry over land on a conflicts page, and someone has to read the code, pick the right version of each file and test the draft before it goes live.

As of October 2026, 4 experts carry the Theme Updater & Backups badge on shopexperts: 1 agency and 3 freelancers, based in Canada, Nepal and Bulgaria.

Theme update jobs that justify paying someone

The app handles the file shuffling. These jobs still need a person who reads Liquid.

Clearing conflicted customizations. After an AI-powered update, files the app couldn't merge are flagged in yellow on the Conflicted Customizations page. Each one shows the AI's suggested fix, your old code and the new default code, and somebody has to choose which survives.

Testing the draft before it goes live. The update arrives as a new theme draft in your Online Store. Product pages, cart, search and every app block need a pass on desktop and mobile before you publish it.

Fresh copy or merge. On a theme with years of layered edits, "Install fresh copy" plus a planned rebuild of the custom parts can beat an automatic merge. An expert who has seen the code can tell you which route fits.

App integrations on the new version. Pro aims to keep code edits and app integrations, yet review widgets, upsell blocks and tracking scripts still deserve a click-through on the draft. Broken pieces are theme customization work.

A backup you have actually tested. Turning on Vault, confirming the first snapshot and restoring one product as a trial run. Disaster recovery specialists plan the wider recovery process around it.

Untouched themes can skip the hire. If nobody ever edited the theme code, the Free plan's default-state files may be all you need, and a paid expert adds little.

How to vet a theme updater specialist

Most theme developers can press the update button. You want someone who has resolved merge conflicts on your theme family before.

Ask how they settle a conflicted file. A solid answer: open each flagged file, read the AI suggestion against the old code line by line, keep the new default where the old edit is no longer needed, and write down every choice.

Ask where they will make changes. On the new draft theme only. Anyone planning to edit the live theme mid-update is taking a risk you don't need.

Ask what they'll click through. Expect a short checklist: home page, a product with variants, collection filters, cart, the checkout handoff, each installed app and mobile layouts.

Ask which update route they prefer. The app and Shopify's built-in theme update are separate paths, and Out of the Sandbox's help center says updates through Shopify aren't supported by the app. A careful expert picks one and explains why.

Quotes that skip the homework. A fixed quote before anyone has seen the conflicts page. No duplicate theme or backup before starting. Pushing to publish the same day with no review window.

A good trial task. Run the Pro update on your theme, clear the conflicts and send a plain list of what changed. You publish only after clicking through the draft yourself.

Shopify theme updater app plans, limits and gotchas

Plans as of October 2026. Updater Free costs $0 and covers the latest theme files in their default state, update alerts and free sections. Updater Pro is $9 a month or $96 a year. Vault Backups is $29 a month or $312 a year, and Theme Sections is $4 a month. Paid plans start with a 7-day free trial.

Only Pro carries your work across. Moving theme editor content, customizations and settings into the new version, plus the before-and-after comparison, belongs to Pro. Free hands you a clean theme.

Supported themes are a short list. The help center says the app supports Out of the Sandbox themes and those of a few other premium theme developers. A theme marked "Unregistered" in the app must be registered before an update runs.

The live theme stays put. Each update adds a new theme draft to your Online Store, so publishing is a separate step you schedule.

Heavier edits, longer updates. Out of the Sandbox notes that update time varies with the level of customization.

What Vault covers. Products, collections, themes, orders, customers and more, with instant restore, one year of backup history and unlimited storage.

Alerts beyond updates. The app emails you when a new theme version is out and when Shopify outages are detected. The app's interface is listed in English alone.

Theme updater questions from Shopify merchants

Is the Shopify theme updater app free?

The base plan is. As of October 2026, Updater Free costs $0 and gives you the newest theme files in their default state, update alerts and free sections. Carrying your customizations into the new version needs Updater Pro at $9 a month, and store backups need Vault Backups at $29 a month. Each paid plan starts with a 7-day trial.

Will an update wipe my customizations?

Not by itself. The update is added as a new draft theme, so the published one stays as it was. On Pro, the AI-powered option tries to merge your content, settings and code edits. Whatever it can't merge is listed as a conflict for you or an expert to resolve before anything is published.

Do I need a developer to use the theme updater?

Not always. On a theme whose code was never edited, there are no code conflicts to settle, so the job is mostly reviewing the draft. Once the conflicts page lists files, someone who reads Liquid should decide each one, and the vendor notes that heavily customized themes take longer to update.

Does the app work with any Shopify theme?

No. Out of the Sandbox's help center lists its own themes plus a few other premium theme developers. Themes from elsewhere fall outside it, and so do updates made through Shopify's built-in theme update. Register the theme in the app first if it shows as unregistered.

What should I send an expert before a theme update?

Your theme name and version, the app plan you're on, collaborator access, and a list of every app that adds blocks or scripts to the storefront. Add screenshots of custom sections and the date you want to publish, leaving a few days for review. Vault subscribers should say when the last backup ran.
