Shopify Checkout Customization Experts

Most checkout requests start as "can we add this to the checkout?", and the answer depends on your Shopify plan before it depends on the developer. Shopify checkout customization covers what a buyer sees and chooses between the cart and the order confirmation: branding, fields, upsells, delivery and payment options, and the one-page or three-page layout.

Every plan can restyle the checkout in the editor and add blocks to the Thank you and Order status pages. Custom blocks inside the information, shipping and payment steps need Shopify Plus. Old checkout.liquid edits and Scripts no longer run, so rebuilding that work on the current tools is part of the job too.

This service is about deciding and scoping the change. If you already know you need a custom block built, the checkout UI extensions service is narrower, and discount or delivery logic on its own is Shopify Functions work. Compare the checkout specialists below, or request a quote that names your plan and the change you want.

How to hire for Shopify checkout customization

Checkout code is small and its mistakes are expensive. A block that breaks the payment step costs sales every hour it stays live, so vet for recent checkout work, not general Shopify skill.

Put your plan in the first line of the brief. It decides what can be built before anyone talks about design. A developer who quotes an in-checkout upsell to a non-Plus store without raising the plan hasn't done checkout work lately.

Ask what they would configure before what they would build. Field settings, branding and the one-page layout live in the admin. Hiding a delivery option on a non-Plus store is usually a public app built on Functions. A good specialist tells you which parts need no code and quotes custom work only for what's left.

Ask for extension work, not old checkout screenshots. For years, checkout customisation meant editing checkout.liquid, and that skill no longer transfers. In September 2026, 513 profiles on shopexperts listed checkout work and few had claimed them, so ask each for shipped checkout extensions or Functions, not a badge, plus the plan each store was on.

Check partner tiers in Shopify's own directory. There are five tiers: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum, and Platinum is the top one. Building Functions isn't a Plus Partner credential either, so a tier alone doesn't prove checkout skill.

Red flags. Offers to restyle any checkout element with custom CSS. Quotes that never mention your plan. No testing across mobile, accelerated checkouts and each market you sell in. No answer on who updates the extension after Shopify changes the checkout.

Shopify Plus checkout customization vs other plans

Settle the plan question before you collect quotes. It changes the scope more than any design decision will.

Every plan. The checkout editor sets your logo, colours, fonts and the one-page or three-page layout. Checkout settings make fields such as company name, address line 2 and phone number hidden, optional or required. The Thank you and Order status pages accept extensions, so surveys, reorder prompts and post-purchase offers can live there.

Public apps that contain Functions also work on any plan. That's the usual route for a non-Plus store that needs to hide, rename or reorder delivery and payment options.

Plus only. UI extensions inside the information, shipping and payment steps, whether they come from a public app or a custom build: a gift message field, a delivery date picker, an upsell beside the order summary, a returns note by the pay button. Also custom apps with Functions, which is how Plus stores get discount, delivery or payment logic no public app sells.

Why checkout.liquid edits are gone. Plus stores used to edit the checkout template directly. Those edits broke when Shopify changed the checkout and held stores back from newer checkout features. Extensions replaced them with fixed, upgrade-safe slots, Functions took over the logic, and custom pixels in Customer events took over tracking.

The deadline has passed on every plan. Plus stores had to move their Thank you and Order status pages off checkout.liquid and Additional Scripts by August 2025, and non-Plus stores lost Additional Scripts and script tags on those pages in August 2026. If a pixel, message or upsell quietly disappeared from your order confirmation, that's the likely reason — it needs rebuilding, not restoring.

How much does a custom Shopify checkout cost?

The price of a Shopify custom checkout depends on where the change lives and how many markets it has to work in. Typical ranges:

Branding and settings

$500 – $3,000

Checkout editor, branding, fields

Extensions and Functions

$3,000 – $25,000

Custom UI blocks, discount and delivery logic

Plus specialist rate

$150 – $400

Per hour

The first tile is mostly configuration: branding, field settings, layout, and Thank you page blocks from existing apps. Non-Plus projects usually stay in this tier, since deeper in-checkout changes need Plus.

The second tile is custom code. Each extension or Function adds build and test time, and so does every language, currency and payment method it has to handle. A single delivery-date block usually sits toward the lower end; rebuilding several old checkout.liquid customisations along with their tracking pushes toward the top.

Frequently asked questions about customising the Shopify checkout

Can I customize Shopify checkout without Shopify Plus?

Yes, for the look of the checkout and everything after payment. For anything you wanted to collect or offer mid-checkout, the underused option is the cart page. A theme developer can add gift notes, delivery instructions or a date picker there on any plan, and the answers reach the order as cart attributes your team sees in the admin. It costs a fraction of a Plus upgrade and often does the same job.

Should I switch to Shopify one page checkout?

Shopify offers both a one-page and a three-page layout, and you can switch between them in the checkout editor. One-page puts contact, delivery and payment on a single screen, which suits short baskets and returning buyers. Three-page gives each step more room, which some stores with complex delivery choices prefer. Test on your own traffic rather than trusting general claims, and check every extension on the layout you pick, since a block that fits the shipping step can crowd a single page.

Is Shopify Plus checkout customization worth upgrading for?

Rarely on its own. Plus is a large step up in monthly cost, and checkout access alone seldom justifies it. It makes sense when checkout sits on a longer list: several storefronts, custom discount logic that no app sells, or order volume where small checkout improvements add up. If your checkout wish list is two or three blocks, price the cart page and Thank you page versions first.

Is checkout customisation the same as Shopify checkout optimization?

Not quite. Customisation builds or changes what the checkout does. Optimisation is a testing programme: finding where buyers drop off, forming a hypothesis and changing one thing at a time. Much of that work happens before checkout, on product and cart pages, because the checkout itself is deliberately locked down. If your problem is drop-off rather than a missing feature, start with a conversion specialist and bring in a checkout developer for whatever the tests say to build.

Who maintains Shopify checkout page customization after launch?

Agree it before the build starts. Extensions and Functions are built against dated API versions, and Shopify supports each version for a limited time, so someone has to update and redeploy them. Shopify also changes the checkout itself, which can shift where a block appears. Ask for a small retainer or a fixed check before each peak season, access to the code, and a written list of every extension: where it sits, what it does and who owns it.

Can the checkout match my theme exactly?

No, and that's by design. Branding covers your logo, colours, fonts and a few layout options, but the checkout doesn't accept custom CSS or scripts. That keeps it fast, secure and consistent with accelerated checkouts. Aim for clearly the same brand rather than a pixel match, and put the heavier design effort into the cart page, which your theme fully controls.
